Ethereum — The Foundation
Ethereum is the most secure and decentralized smart contract platform. Its massive developer ecosystem, highest TVL (Total Value Locked), and institutional trust make it the gold standard for serious DeFi and NFT projects. Downside: gas fees of $5-50 per transaction are prohibitive for consumer apps.
Polygon — Best for Consumer Apps
Polygon (formerly Matic) is an Ethereum Layer 2 with gas fees under $0.01. It uses the same Solidity contracts as Ethereum and bridges assets from Ethereum mainnet. For consumer-facing DApps, gaming, and NFT marketplaces targeting Indian users, Polygon offers the best cost-performance balance.
Binance Smart Chain (BSC)
BSC offers low fees (~$0.10) and fast transactions (3 second blocks). Its CeDeFi (centralized elements) approach trades some decentralization for performance. BSC is popular for DeFi protocols targeting retail users in emerging markets. Strong in Southeast Asia and increasingly in India.
Developer Experience
All three support Solidity. Ethereum has the best tooling (Hardhat, Foundry, Truffle). Polygon is fully compatible with Ethereum tools. BSC has good tooling but a smaller community. For teams new to blockchain, Polygon on top of Ethereum tooling offers the smoothest experience.
Our Recommendation 2025
For NFT marketplaces and gaming: Polygon. For high-value DeFi protocols: Ethereum. For retail DeFi with low fees: BSC or Polygon. For enterprise blockchain: consider Hyperledger or private Ethereum. Most production DApps now deploy on multiple chains for maximum reach.
